Blakes 7 - Liberator Prototype

This is my 3D interpretation of the original Roger Murray Leach production design sketch of the Liberator from Blake’s 7. The main differences between the sketch and what we eventually saw on TV are that the ship is upside down with two pods uppermost, those pods are also anchored to the main hull closer to the centre line rather than being spaced out evenly around the main hull. Also the engine globe is not spherical as we see in the series.

I decided that as there are no guidelines to colour on the sketch that I would approach the materials differently, rather than simply copying the TV colours. I imagined as the hull is supposed to be an extremely strong, self repairing organic metal that it should be metallic, the detailing on the hull is modelled and I chose a coppery colour because it seemed warmer and more organic, this is an organic procedural texture in which I have also added an element controlled by a checker board pattern to give a slight sense of order and smaller detail panelling. I then added a dirt texture controlled by the dirty vertex paint colour layer. The globe is basically purple because I like it and it works with the copper.

Just as the TV version deviates from the sketch for practical reasons, I have made a couple of changes:

1) In order to get the upper pods in the same position they sit in the 2D sketch, they are not evenly spaced and they look too close together when viewed from the front (a bit like how the nacelles on the 2009 Star Trek film look odd because they are too close together). I decided to keep the distance of all pods even relative to the main hull and rotated them 80 degrees from the bottom pod on each side which is roughly the same anchor point but the top pods sit lower and don’t match the sketch.

2) Some of the sketch details are hard to ascertain if they are supposed to be alien lettering or pannelling, or what they are supposed to be at all. I decided to cut down on the amount of possible alien lettering and keep it mainly to the common letters used across the ship. There is a lot more panelling filled in on my model to try and maintain an even look across the ship.

I have now created some "Chase Craft" - smaller one pod versions of the Liberator as seen in the episode "Redemption"
